LAUGHING GAS

IV SEDATION

For our very anxious patients or for patients who need complex treatment, we might recommend IV sedation. Older children won’t be able to drive; make sure someone can drive to and from the appointment.

With intravenous, or IV, sedation, the medication is administered directly into a vein so it takes effect quickly. Your child will need some recovery time in the office because IV sedation takes some time to leave the bloodstream. We will make sure your child feels okay and give you any additional instruction before you go.

    FAQs

What sedation options do you offer?
We offer two options based on your child’s needs: laughing gas (nitrous oxide) for mild anxiety and IV sedation for longer or more complex treatment. Both are administered by experienced clinicians in our kid-friendly setting to help children relax and receive care comfortably.

    Is sedation safe for children?
Yes. Safety is our top priority. Your child’s medical history is reviewed, vitals are continuously monitored, and dosing is tailored to their size and health. Laughing gas wears off quickly, while IV sedation is overseen with an additional anesthesia provider for safe, predictable recovery.

    When is sedation recommended?
Sedation may be recommended for significant dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, special healthcare needs, or lengthy/complex procedures. We discuss benefits, risks, and alternatives with parents so you can choose the most comfortable, effective approach for your child’s treatment plan.

How should my child prepare for sedation?
Preparation depends on the sedation type. We’ll provide written instructions, including food and drink guidelines, day-of medications, and clothing suggestions. Please bring a comfort item, arrive early, and ensure a parent or guardian can remain during the visit and drive home afterward.

What happens during and after the appointment?
During treatment, we monitor breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels continuously. Afterward, your child rests briefly as they wake and we review home-care and pain-control tips. Most children feel drowsy after IV sedation; laughing gas typically wears off within minutes with minimal lingering effects.
